What is a GosHawk? There are 15 species of birds known as Goshawks that are prevalent in the western US. The Northern Goshawk(Accipiter gentilis) is a native to Utah, and nests primarily in heavy coniferous forests, containing Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, and Englemann Spruce, and also areas high in abundance with Quaking Aspens. Adults are normally 21 to 26 inches long with a wing span of 40 to 46 inches. This makes it one of the larger raptors, or birds of prey. For food, the Goshawk preys upon small mammals such as cottontail rabbits, snowshoe hares and red squirrels, and also other birds such as the raven, robin, and magpie.
